Ombre Hair Color

In other words, color melting. This is such a big trend this season! So many celebrates are pulling off this look.
Dark root, light ends! The key is to color the root just a shade darker than your natural color & blend it in with the blond. It's low maintenance because you don't have to worry about coming back in for re-touching your new growth for a while. Especially nice if you want a pretty color but don't want to pay for highlights every month or so to keep them up. Also, no worry about the grow-out line. You can do it as gradual or as bold as you would like! Using about 2-3 colors, but you can do more if your hair is longer and you want to go lighter more gradually.
So what do you think? Let us know if you like this "ombre" trend or think that everyone has gone crazy!

Henna Tattoos!

By appointment only, we will be offering Henna Tattoos on Friday!
Call the salon to book your appointment!
801-379-0540

What is a Henna Tattoo? Wikipedia says "Henna tattoos, also known as Mehndi, is another form of temporary tattoo. Coming from a south Asian tradition, henna uses a paste made from the powdered leaves of the Henna plant, Lawsonia inermis. Its active dye, Lawsone, binds with the keratin in skin, fingernails, and hair. Traditional henna is drawn in delicate patterns on the hands and feet, but modern henna is applied in all sorts of designs anywhere on the body. Unlike other forms of temporary tattoos, henna does not allow for a full range of colors but only shades of reds, browns, and near-blacks. The paste is applied and left on the skin for several hours to stain. The stain will gradually fade away as the skin sheds. Henna tattoos can last days to over a month depending on application and aftercare.
However, caution should be taken as many products labeled henna are misleading. Fast-staining "black henna" can contain para-phenylenediamine (PPD) which can cause allergic reactions and scarring."

Skincare for Men

Image Skincare posted an article about what men's skincare routine should be. Don't worry guys, it's nothing too girly, just the basics!

Basic Skincare for Men

Does your man’s skincare regimen measure up to his professional need to look his best?  Let’s face it, in this economy every little detail matters whether your guy is looking for new opportunities or solidifying his job security.  His personal appearance plays an important role in how others perceive his energy, credibility, and trustworthiness.
In order to maintain their edge, guys of all ages are interested in taking care of themselves and indulging in image enhancing products, gadgets and treatments – even if they pretend not to!  But since they are still men, they are impatient and less likely to grasp the concept of maintenance routines. In fact they generally prefer to get it over with in one shot.
If the image he presents at work is important to your guy, then getting it over with in one shot isn’t going to do.  Let’s look at some options for the basics.
Although men have thicker skin (didn’t we all know that ladies!)- approximately 0.5mm thicker than women’s, it is also oilier, with larger exposed pores, and more of a tendency to break out in a sweat.  Therefore, using deodorant soaps directly on the face is a practice men should avoid, as this might irritate their skin and leave a residue.  Men should try a cleanser that will leave their skin feeling fresh and clean.
Skin that gets shaved on a regular basis has a whole host of other problems – like red bumps, ingrown hairs and dry patches. For these instances, men should remember that razor burn or cuts can be reduced by using a good cleanser, a good quality scrub every couple of days and a softening shave cream with a sharp razor, followed by a soothing moisturizer.  Of course changing the blades regularly is also vital.
The problem of excessive oil and shine can be addressed by using products like the Clear Cell Salicylic Clarifying Tonic.  The advice of beauty editors is for men to use a weekly treatment product containing salicylic acid.  Keep in mind that, if they are willing to go just one step further, adding atonic can reduce pore size, control oil slicks, and help avoid nasty ingrown hairs.  Guys do need to be mindful of not using a product that’s too harsh, as it will strip away essential oils when the skin is most vulnerable.
While the same basics of skincare apply to both men and women, without a doubt men are definitely taking more notice of what’s looking back at them in the mirror these days.
How does your man’s skincare routine measure up?
Could he use some more encouragement or does he surprise you with the amount of effort he makes taking care of his appearance on a regular basis?

My husband only uses shampoo for his face (a big no no!) One day he will have a normal regimen! Just one day at a time ;)

Here is a great video on rag curling. When you watch it you are gonna ask yourself why didn't I think of this? It's such a simple technique and with the right sectioning and placement it can give you amazing natural looking wavy curls! Much easier and less time consuming that using that flat iron or curling iron to curl your hair! Check out the tutorial HERE. The tutorial is about 12 minutes long but make sure you watch it all for the best tips and results!

What happens in the salon, stays in the salon!

My favorite part of being in a salon is the conversation!

I sit by the phone, waiting for it to ring, most of the day. When the dryers aren't going, I can hear everything! I love it! Just the other day, two of our stylist & a client were talking about what happens to our bodies when we're pregnant. (Congratulations Gillian who is 18 weeks along!) The conversation moved from baby sizes to belly sizes to even boob sizes! That was the funniest part of the whole topic, comparing boobs! (don't worry, we are a very modest salon. no one pulled anything out ;)
I love it when clients bring in their friends & everyone is just having a ball!
So next time you have an appointment, tell your friends & bring them in! Who knows, them may find their favorite new stylist here!

Braided bang tutorial

Great tutorial for french braided bangs. I've had lots of clients and friends want to know how to create this style on themselves. Here's a quick video to learn how. For those of you with longer hair it also looks super cute to keep the braid going down around the side of your face and ear and under then show the braid off a bit more by pulling all your hair into a ponytail.

Have any of you seen The Doctors on ABC? I love it! Yesterday they had Dermatologist, Dr. Jessica Wu, author of Feed your Face. She says that while we pay attention to what's on our faces, we should be paying attention to what's on your plates.

On The Doctors website, they have a detailed list that Dr. Jessica Wu created for your skin; what foods are good for your skin & what foods are bad for your skin.

Foods That Enhance Your Skin:
• Tomatoes contain loads of lycopene that is enhanced by cooking, which helps fight sun damage. Order your pizza with extra sauce!
• Bloody Marys: Both virgin and non-virgin, this is the best cocktail for your skin. Tomato juice contains lycopene which has been shown to fight sun damage.
• Green and yellow veggies: These foods have been linked to lessening wrinkles, especially crow's feet. Try peppers, zucchini, squash and spinach.
• Lean meats: Beef, lamb, chicken and fish contain amino acids, such as glycine and proline, which replenish collagen.
• Fresh fish: Salmon, sardines and mackerel.
• Soy: Soy milk, tofu and edamame.
• Dark chocolate containing more than 70 percent cocoa.• Green beans: This vegetable is packed with silicon, which helps grow long, strong hair and nails.
• Walnuts and almonds: These nuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids.
• Berries.
• Whole wheat bread and pasta.
• Rolled oats instead of instant oatmeal.
• Brown rice.
• Cold drinks.
Foods to Avoid:
• Dairy: Milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream and lattes all contain cow hormones that can increase oil production and clog pores.
• Packaged baked goods.
• White foods such as white bread, pasta, rice.
• Hidden sugar: Sodas, bottled salad dressings and sweetened cereals.
• High-fructose corn syrup.
• Vinegar and pickles.
• Aged cheeses: Parmesan and blue.
• Spicy foods, especially if you have rosacea or facial redness.
• High-sugar fruits: Grapes, pineapple and bananas.
• Steaming hot food and drinks.
• Tuna steak or solid white tuna, as mercury can cause hair loss.
• Monosodium Glutamate (MSG).

I told my husband about this list & he agrees with it, he just doesn't agree in doing it lol We'll see about that ;)
 Hope this list helps you!

hot hair trends for summer 2011

Halfsies

Perfect for those humidity-stricken mornings, use a clipless curling iron to curl the mid-section of your hair and flat-iron the ends straight to nix frizz.

Unkempt Side Braid

The mantra for this summer's side braid is the messier, the better. Give yourself a deep side part and pull hair to one side. Start braiding at the top of your ear for a loose braid with bigger plaits. Let pieces fall out naturally to create a more relaxed look.

Let Your Frizz Fly

Flyaways were (thankfully) all over the runways this season, meaning you don't have to sweat to death in your bathroom trying to slick all your hair back. To make fuzzies chic, pull hair back into a ponytail or bun at the center of your head and spritz with a flexible hairspray.

Slicked Back Bun

If you've just hopped out of the pool or are in a rush, this style is great for on the go. Use a firm holding gel to pull your hair back into a low bun that will stick with you all day.

Get a Piecey Cut

Winter's polished pixie is being replaced with a textured, choppy cut. If you plan on cutting your hair to stay cool in the heat, make sure your shortest layer hits the top of your ear like Jessica Stroup's, so you can still have some styling options.

One-Sided Half-Up 'Do

For a quickie half-up 'do, create a small braid or twist on one side of your head with a fun flipped over part like Kate Bosworth's here.

Cheerleader Ponytails

Low ponytails are being replaced with high, cheerleader-esque styles that hit at the crown or just below. To give yours some more oomph, push your ponytail forward to create volume on top.

Flat Buns

Tame down your ballerina bun by creating a high ponytail, wrapping and securing hair around an elastic and then gently pulling at the sides to flatten it out.

Lightly Tousled Waves

Waves are always in, but this season expect to see a break from the all out sexy bedhead and instead more subtle, soft curls in its place. Try this look by curling just the ends of your hair or flipping them out with your flatiron.

Put a Lid on It
Having a bad hair day has never been so fun with this season's brims, like Reese Witherspoon's staple fedora.

Fiesty Feathers

Glam up any hairstyle in a flash with a skinny hair feather accessory, like Selena Gomez does here.
